The Northern Territory Supreme Court has sentenced the main accused, Brendon Cantilla, to life imprisonment for the murder of Bangladeshi student Md. Isfakur Rahman Sifat (23) while he was sleeping in his home in Darwin, Australia. The verdict mandates that the convict must serve at least 20 years in prison, until the year 2043.

The incident occurred on the morning of May 3, 2023, when Cantilla broke into Sifat's home in the Milner area of Darwin with the intent to commit theft. He then severely struck the sleeping Sifat on the head with a fire extinguisher cylinder. Sifat passed away the following day, May 4, at the hospital. Sifat was a brilliant postgraduate student at Charles Darwin University.

Following a six-day trial, the jury rejected the claim of manslaughter and found Cantilla guilty of direct murder. The expatriate Bangladeshi community in Australia has expressed relief over the verdict and extended condolences to Sifat's family.
