A powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake in China's Tibet region has left at least 16 people dead and over a hundred injured. The tremor struck the Nagqu area in northern Tibet on Thursday at 10:33 PM local time. At least 339 homes collapsed as a result, and rescue and relief operations are currently underway in the affected areas.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in a remote and sparsely populated area north of Nagqu city. The depth from the surface was approximately 10 to 18 kilometers. Hundreds of aftershocks have been felt in the surrounding areas following the main earthquake, disrupting the communication system and causing a section of a national highway to close due to landslides.
Police and emergency service personnel, along with local workers, have been deployed for the rescue operations. It has been reported that more than 12,000 people have been evacuated from the affected areas to safe locations. Tents, temporary housing, bedding, and winter clothing have been dispatched for those left homeless.
The earthquake in the remote highland area has created additional challenges for the rescue operations. With intermittent snowfall forecasted for the next few days, rescue and relief efforts could become even more difficult. Authorities are continuing their rescue operations to cope with the situation.
