Overcoming a deficit in the first round of voting and staging a dramatic comeback in the second round, left-wing leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has secured a surprising victory in the Brazilian presidential election. Defeating right-wing rival Flavio Bolsonaro, the 80-year-old leader is set to become the country's president for the fourth time. Leaders from around the world, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have congratulated him on his victory.
According to the election results, Lula secured 51.79 percent of the votes, while Flavio Bolsonaro received 48.21 percent. The margin between the two candidates is nearly 4.4 million votes. In the first round of elections held on October 4, Flavio had taken the lead with 47 percent of the vote, while Lula had 45 percent. However, Lula managed to bridge the gap and snatch victory in the final battle.
This is the first time since Brazil's return to democracy in 1988 that a candidate trailing in the first round has won the second round to become president. Lula's comeback is considered a significant event in the country's political history.
Addressing his supporters after the victory, Lula said they had won the battle to protect democracy. He also remarked that Brazil will not remain anyone's 'backyard.' Lula shared plans to increase public participation in governance and build a closer relationship with citizens through digital communication.
On the other hand, unwilling to accept defeat, Flavio Bolsonaro described the results as 'inexplicable' and demanded the cancellation of the election. He also raised objections regarding the two-hour extension of voting time. However, according to electoral experts, the likelihood of the results being annulled is very low.
Despite Lula's victory, it is believed that Brazil's political divisions will not easily dissipate. More than 48 percent of voters supported Flavio in the election. Additionally, with a strong presence of right-wing parties in the country's congress, implementing the new government's policies could prove difficult.
Flavio's father and former president Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence in connection with a coup attempt case following his defeat in the 2022 election. His son contested the election carrying that political legacy forward.
Lula also faces major challenges regarding environmental protection. According to satellite data, deforestation in the Amazon region reached 3,335 square kilometers in the one-year period up to July this year, which is 42 percent lower than the previous year. However, Lula has also faced criticism from environmentalists for supporting offshore oil exploration near the mouth of the Amazon River.
Global leaders including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa have congratulated Lula on his victory. However, the reaction of US President Donald Trump was not known at the time. The United States had supported Flavio Bolsonaro in the election.
Through this victory, Lula is returning to the leadership of Brazil once again. However, his new term is set to begin amidst deep political polarization, a strong opposition camp, and ongoing debates surrounding economic and environmental policies.
