Amid Growing Tensions with Zelenskyy, Trump Suspends Multiple Sanctions on Russia

Amid a deepening dispute with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, U.S. President Donald Trump has suspended several sanctions imposed on Russia. On Friday night, he announced in an executive order that some of these sanctions would not be implemented, triggering criticism among U.S. lawmakers.

After passing the U.S. Congress, the sanctions-related legislation entered the implementation process following Trump's signature last September. However, just two days before the scheduled deadline, Trump suspended certain restrictions, arguing that the decision is necessary for U.S. 'national interests.'

The new law included various measures aimed at exerting pressure on Russia's economy. Among them, the president was granted the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on goods from the top five buyers of Russian oil and gas, with China and India specifically highlighted on this list. Additionally, the legislation provisioned sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin and other senior officials, restrictions on financial institutions, and actions against Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet' of vessels used to evade existing sanctions. Several of these provisions have now been suspended.

Trump's decision was praised by Russia's special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev. In a post on the social media platform X, he described it as a 'significant and truly historic moment.' He claimed that had the sanctions been implemented, they would have caused major damage not only to Russia but also to the United States and global markets, adding that economic cooperation between the two nations is mutually beneficial.

On the other hand, U.S. Democratic lawmakers strongly criticized the decision. Virginia Congressman Don Beyer accused Trump's move of amounting to capitulation to Moscow and weakening U.S. support for Ukraine. He stated that the decision to suspend sanctions runs counter to the objective of the legislation enacted by Congress to ensure punishment for Russian aggression.

Recent events have increased friction in relations between Washington and Kyiv. Last week, controversy arose over the decision to temporarily ease certain U.S. sanctions for importing diesel from Russia. This step was taken as an effort to control rising fuel prices in the U.S. caused by the impact of the Iran war, though Ukraine and European allies criticized it.

Zelenskyy compared this decision to funding Russia's war effort. Later, Trump claimed that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an 'energy ceasefire,' which would facilitate Russian diesel exports. However, following continuous Russian attacks, Ukraine resumed strikes on Russian oil refineries. In response, Trump called Ukraine's action 'shameful,' while Zelenskyy stated that he was only defending Ukraine's interests.

Meanwhile, concerns have also arisen regarding U.S. support for Ukraine's military capabilities. Ukraine alleged that a sudden speed reduction in the Starling satellite internet system used in U.S. aid disrupted their drone operations on the battlefield and made it difficult to counter Russian attacks. Zelenskyy stated on Friday that Starlink's speed had still not fully normalized. However, Trump denied the allegations of halting intelligence sharing or intentionally slowing down Ukraine's Starlink connection.

Russia's latest decision to ease sanctions is likely to further increase Ukraine's dissatisfaction. As the war continues, Zelenskyy has long emphasized the need for strict sanctions to limit Russia's economic capacity.
