Ordinary people are facing mounting pressure as the prices of essential commodities continue to rise one after another in the capital's markets. Broiler chicken is being sold at 190 taka per kg, and no fish is available for 200 taka. At the same time, with eggs priced at 140 to 150 taka per dozen, household expenses are increasing for low- and middle-income families. With almost all daily necessities showing an upward trend in prices, buyers are struggling to cope. This picture was observed on Friday, August 21, while visiting various markets in the capital.
A firsthand tour of the markets revealed that over the span of a week, the price of broiler chicken has increased slightly in the meat market, selling today at 190 taka, Sonali chicken at 320 taka, and local chicken at 650 taka per kg. Beef is priced at 780 to 800 taka per kg. Discomfort also persists in the egg market. White eggs are selling at 130 taka a dozen, and brown eggs at 140 to 150 taka. However, some variation in the prices of these products is observed depending on the area, markets, and neighborhood shops. In neighborhood grocery shops, eggs are being sold at 155 to 160 taka.
The fish market presents the exact same picture. Tilapia is selling at 250 to 260 taka, pangasius at 230 to 250 taka, rui and catla at 380 to 420 taka, and shrimp at 1,000 to 1,300 taka per kg. Pabda is selling at 350 to 400 taka, large-sized rui at 450 to 500 taka, and tengra at 700 taka per kg. Bhetki is priced at 400 to 550 taka, mrigel at 250 to 300 taka, eel at 600 to 800 taka, local koi at 700 to 800 taka, farmed koi at 300 taka, poa at 260 taka, and shol at 700 taka. Farmed shing fish is selling at 300 to 450 taka per kg depending on size. Medium-sized rui can be purchased at 300 to 350 taka per kg. In addition, buying pomfret, shol, and river bele fish requires spending more than a thousand taka. Hilsa weighing 900 grams to 1 kg is selling at 2,500 taka, while Hilsa weighing 1 kg 300 grams is priced at nearly 3,000 taka.
