Police have brought three charges against 43-year-old Brendon Nugent in connection with the incident in which Australian independent Member of Parliament Helen Haines was struck by a vehicle and seriously injured. The formal charges against the accused were announced on Tuesday, October 20. Meanwhile, the father of the accused stated that their family has shared a friendship with Haines for more than 20 years, with his family describing the event as 'devastating and unbelievable'.
Sixty-five-year-old Haines was struck by a vehicle on Monday afternoon at around 3:30 p.m. local time outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. According to eyewitness accounts, after a Toyota Land Cruiser struck her, the driver reversed the vehicle and hit her again. As a result, she became trapped between two cars and sustained severe injuries.
Haines was transported to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. Following surgery, she remains in a critical condition, having lost one leg while doctors attempt to save the other. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident not as an accident, but as a deliberate attack, though the motive behind the assault remains unconfirmed.
Victoria Police stated that Nugent has been charged with driving dangerously causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and harming a Commonwealth public official. He is scheduled to appear in the Wangaratta Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. Police are investigating whether the incident was premeditated, with counter-terrorism authorities also involved in the investigation.
In a statement, the father of the accused, Rod Nugent, and his partner, Christine Cunningham, said that Haines is a long-standing family friend and a highly respected member of the local community. Expressing their love and sympathy for her, they pledged full cooperation with police in the investigation.
Meanwhile, several eyewitnesses, including local barber Ricky Jeffries, stepped forward to detain the accused. Jeffries stated that he recovered a knife from the pocket of the accused and removed it. Police subsequently arrived at the scene and took the accused into custody.
Haines has served as the independent MP for the electorate of Indi since 2019. The attack on her has created a sombre atmosphere in Wangaratta, where local residents have been placing flowers in front of her electorate office and praying for her swift recovery.
