The outbreak of dengue in Bangladesh has reached an alarming level. In the last 24 hours, five more people have died after being infected by the Aedes mosquito-borne disease. During the same period, 1,366 new patients have been admitted to hospitals. With this, the death toll from dengue has reached 357 so far this year, and the total number of hospitalizations has increased to 115,617.
According to data released by the Directorate General of Health Services on Tuesday, October 20, two of the five people who died in the past day were undergoing treatment at hospitals within the Dhaka North City Corporation area. Meanwhile, two deaths occurred in areas outside the Barishal City Corporation, and one death was reported in an area outside the Rangpur City Corporation.
Meanwhile, among the newly infected patients, 110 have been admitted to hospitals in the Dhaka North City Corporation area and 113 in the Dhaka South City Corporation area. The highest number of patients, 415, were admitted to hospitals in other areas of the Dhaka division.
Division-wise statistics show that 191 patients were newly admitted to hospitals in Barishal, 141 in Khulna, 128 in Rajshahi, 105 in Chattogram, 80 in Mymensingh, 72 in Rangpur, and 11 in Sylhet.
According to the statistics of the Directorate General of Health Services, the most severe form of the dengue situation in the country was observed in 2023. In that year, 321,179 patients were admitted to hospitals and 1,705 died. Last year, more than 400 people also died from dengue, and the number of patients admitted to hospitals was around 102,000.
The admission of a large number of patients and the occurrence of deaths this year as well are raising concerns regarding the public health situation. To curb the spread of dengue, it is necessary to emphasize destroying the breeding grounds of Aedes mosquitoes, removing stagnant water, and keeping the surrounding environment clean.
