As such incidents are rare in Australia, this event has caused a global uproar.

After being severely injured in a car-ramming incident, Australian independent Member of Parliament Helen Haines has ultimately lost both legs. On Monday, a vehicle struck her outside her electorate office in the city of Wangaratta, located in the state of Victoria. Police suspect the incident to be a deliberate attack, and 43-year-old accused Brendan Nugent is facing multiple charges in connection with the event.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday in Melbourne regarding Helen's medical condition, her husband Phil Haines stated that his wife has been critically injured in the horrific incident, though her heart and mental condition remain strong. The biggest relief is that she is alive.

Phil Haines said that his wife's road to recovery will be long and difficult. However, they hope that Helen is a resilient person and will try her best to recover with the love and support of family and relatives. At the same time, he expressed gratitude to the doctors and hospital staff, as well as people from across Australia and around the world who have checked in on Helen. He also urged anyone wishing to support Helen to make a donation to the child rights organization Save the Children.

Following the incident, Helen was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery, where one of her legs had to be amputated. Her husband Phil stated that on Wednesday morning, her other leg also had to be amputated.

Meanwhile, the accused, Brendan Nugent, appeared in a local court for the first time on Wednesday. He faces three charges: reckless driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and harming a Commonwealth public official. Police have stated that they are considering bringing further charges, including attempted murder.

In court, Nugent's lawyer stated that there are concerns regarding his client's mental health. The court was further informed that Nugent suffers from a rare neurological condition called idiopathic transverse myelitis, which causes inflammation of the spinal cord. However, it is not yet confirmed whether there is any link between his health condition and the attack. He did not apply for bail and is scheduled to appear in court again next February. Court documents also show charges against him for cultivating and possessing cannabis.

Victoria Police Commissioner Mike Bush stated that the investigation is proceeding on the assumption that the incident was a deliberate attack, though the motive behind it remains unconfirmed. The Australian Federal Police are also assisting in the investigation. Authorities are examining whether the attacker had any personal relationship with Helen, and whether drug or medication use played a role in the incident. According to police, Nugent was not under their surveillance prior to the incident, and there was no prior intelligence or threat of an attack against Helen.

The incident occurred around 3:35 PM local time on Monday. After Helen, who was outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, was struck by the vehicle, bystanders pulled the accused out of the car and detained him. Jacob and Jackie Evans, who were among the first to arrive and help at the scene, stated that Helen, despite lying severely injured, expressed gratitude for their assistance. Jacob used a tourniquet from his own car's medical kit to help control the bleeding from one of Helen's legs.

Helen Haines was first elected in 2019 from the Victorian electorate of Indi. As political violence is relatively rare in Australia, the incident has sparked shock and concern across the nation's political landscape and among local residents in Wangaratta, with leaders from various political parties expressing their support for her.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he has spoken with Helen's husband several times since the incident. In an interview with the national broadcaster ABC, he also raised concerns about the distinct nature of threats and attacks targeting female politicians, highlighting how they are subjected to various forms of hostility and aggression, including rape threats.

The incident has also reignited discussions regarding the security arrangements for the country's members of parliament. The Federal Police have stated that providing round-the-clock personal security for each of Australia's 226 federal MPs would require a massive workforce. Currently, personal security is determined based on the responsibilities of the member of parliament and the level of threat they face.

Australia's Governor-General Sam Mostin described the incident as a moment of self-reflection for society. In her view, following such events, people should further strengthen the practice of empathy, decency, and humanity.
