Flash floods in Nepal and China's autonomous region of Tibet have left the death toll exceeding one thousand, while 4,500 people remain missing. News agency AFP reported this latest information on Tuesday, September 1, based on the latest data provided by the two countries.
Nepal's National Disaster Mitigation Agency stated that the death toll in their country has reached 987, while China confirmed 16 deaths in Tibet, bringing the combined death toll for both countries to 1,003.
Alongside recovering 987 bodies, Nepal has rescued many people alive, which has reduced the number of missing persons in the country to 3,916. Meanwhile, 546 people remain missing in Tibet.
Consequently, a total of 4,462 people are missing across the two countries. Today marks the seventh day of rescue operations following the catastrophic natural disaster, and with roughly 4,500 people still unaccounted for, it is feared that the death toll will rise significantly.
Among the missing in Nepal are 583 foreigners who had traveled to the Himalayan nation from 30 different countries around the world. In China, 261 foreigners from 23 countries are also reported missing.
Flash floods struck the Bhotekoshi River in Nepal's Rasuwa district last Wednesday. The force of the water was so immense that the bodies of flood victims were washed hundreds of miles away. Due to a lack of adequate freezers, Nepal has been struggling to manage the corpses; therefore, DNA samples are being collected before burying them in mass graves, and the bodies will later be exhumed and handed over to their families once their identities are confirmed.
