El Nino is rapidly strengthening in the Pacific Ocean. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has warned that this ongoing weather pattern could develop into the most powerful El Nino in decades. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has also forecasted that it could be the strongest El Nino recorded since 1950.
According to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, in the final week of August, sea surface temperatures in the crucial 'Nino 3.4' region of the Pacific Ocean were 2.45 degrees Celsius higher than normal. It is forecasted that these temperatures will increase further in the coming spring and summer.
Under the influence of El Nino, there is a risk of abnormally high temperatures and below-average rainfall in southern and eastern Australia. Consequently, the threat of drought and wildfires also increases. The Bureau of Meteorology's long-term forecast has already indicated below-normal rainfall for spring in some areas of the country's south and east.
Some signs of this impact are already visible. Over the past few days, Sydney has experienced unusual heat. Temperatures reached 33 degrees Celsius, which is about 13 degrees higher than the normal temperature for this time of year. Due to the intense heat combined with dry weather and gusty winds, authorities declared an extreme wildfire risk for the greater Sydney region.
The World Meteorological Organization has stated that there is an almost 100 percent probability that the current El Nino will persist until February 2027. According to the organization's forecast, conditions may intensify in the coming months. This could increase the frequency of heavy rainfall, droughts, severe heatwaves, and other extreme weather events in various regions around the world.
However, scientists have warned that there is no guarantee the impact in Australia will increase in direct proportion to how strong El Nino becomes. Australia's weather depends on several other climate drivers, including conditions in the Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean. As a result, even though this El Nino is record-breaking, not every region of the country will experience the same type of weather.
Nonetheless, meteorologists fear that the combined effects of a strong El Nino and ongoing climate change could bring a difficult spring and summer for Australia. In particular, emphasis is being placed on early preparation to tackle the risks of heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires.
