Following a shooting incident in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron that left two Palestinians dead and six Israeli soldiers injured, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced preparations for a complete blockade of the entire West Bank. At the same time, he announced the imposition of movement restrictions within the city of Hebron.
Early Friday morning, an exchange of gunfire broke out between Israeli forces and two armed Palestinians at the northern entrance of Hebron. Reports indicate that the two Palestinians were killed in the incident. Following the event, the presence of Israeli forces in the area has been increased and security measures have been reinforced.
Analysts consider Netanyahu's announcement to be politically significant, coming just four days before Israel's election. Xavier Abu Eid, a political analyst and former communications director for the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), said that through this step, Netanyahu wants to portray himself as a leader who takes strict security measures.
According to Abu Eid, Netanyahu faced criticism over security following the attacks of October 7, 2023. In the current situation, he is once again attempting to send a message of a hardline stance. However, the analyst believes the possibility of the election being postponed is unlikely.
Meanwhile, foreign ministers from Europe and the Middle East have convened in Istanbul to discuss the Strait of Hormuz and the regional security situation. At the same time, tensions persist across various areas of the Middle East.
