Police have arrested Md. Hasan, general secretary of the banned Hathazari upazila branch of Chhatra League, while he was staying at a private hospital in Chattogram city during the birth of his wife's child. He was arrested from Parkview Hospital in the city at around 10:30 am on Monday (September 28). At night, Md. Zahidur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hathazari Model Police Station, confirmed the matter of the arrest.
Hasan's wife was admitted to Parkview Hospital for childbirth. According to his family, after the child was born on Monday morning, Hasan went downstairs to fetch medicine for his wife 15 to 20 minutes after seeing the newborn. At that time, several individuals in plainclothes grabbed and dragged him away from the hospital. The family claimed that those individuals identified themselves as members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police.
The family stated that there were about 25 to 30 people on the hospital premises at that time. A few of them grabbed Hasan and took him away. A hospital official reported that a few individuals, identifying themselves as DB police, took a person away from the hospital.
Meanwhile, CCTV footage from the hospital showed a few individuals in plainclothes taking Hasan outside the hospital. The footage showed several people dragging him out of the hospital, with a few others following behind them.
On the other hand, it could not be confirmed immediately whether the individuals who took Hasan away were members of DB police. However, Hathazari Model Police Station OC Md. Zahidur Rahman later confirmed his arrest. He stated that Hasan was arrested from the hospital itself and that multiple cases are pending against him.
Police stated that Hasan has been shown arrested in three anti-terrorism cases filed at Hathazari Police Station.
Md. Hasan was serving as the general secretary of Hathazari upazila Chhatra League. Information regarding cases against him exists even after the activities of Chhatra League were banned.
Regarding the incident of Hasan's arrest while he was at the hospital during the birth of his wife's child, his family raised allegations concerning the method in which he was taken away. However, the police confirmed the matter of his arrest from the hospital.
