The family of the victims has expressed doubt over the motive behind the murder of retired schoolteacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife, and two children in the Kamalkachhana area of Rangpur city, as presented by the police. Police claimed that two detained youths killed the four individuals following a dispute over preventing them from consuming Yaba. However, relatives of the victims raised the question of whether it was possible for two physically weak and young youths to kill four people simultaneously.
Last Saturday night, police recovered the bodies of Ganapati Chakraborty (65), his wife Pritilata Chakraborty (50), their daughter Agami Chakraborty (25), and son Ayush Chakraborty (13) from a three-story building under construction in the Kamalkachhana area.
In connection with this incident, two local youths, Mughdho Das (23) and Siddhartha Das (19), were detained as suspects. They were later shown arrested in the murder case. Police stated that on Sunday, they gave confessional statements under section 164 in court.
Pooja Chakraborty, the younger sister of the deceased Pritilata, said, 'We are skeptical about the police's claim regarding the motive for the murder. We do not understand anything. The police are saying that two Yaba addicts somehow killed four people one after another.'
On Monday around 5:30 PM, Gopinath Chakraborty, the elder brother of the deceased Ganapati Chakraborty, filed a case regarding the incident at Rangpur Kotwali Police Station. Unidentified individuals were named as accused in the case. Later, police announced that previously detained Mughdho and Siddhartha were shown arrested in that case.
Bishwajit Roy, son-in-law of Gopinath Chakraborty, said, 'What the police are saying is not acceptable at all. Two young boys cannot kill four people. Their physical condition is also not such that they have the capacity to murder four people. There are many questions among us regarding this matter.'
He further said that the almirah and drawers of Ganapati Chakraborty's house were found open and ransacked. The electricity connection was also disconnected. Considering these matters, he demanded an investigation into the actual incident.
Kanu Das, father of the arrested Siddhartha Das, said, 'I travel to various areas performing Kirtan. My son is simple-minded. The police came to the house at night and asked to wake him up. I woke him up and sent him with the police. Later they took him away. I have heard that my son takes some drugs. Even so, that he would murder someone is not credible.'
Sena Das, mother of Mughdho Das, said, 'The boy fell in bad company and takes drugs. However, murdering a person is not an easy thing.'
However, according to the police version, preliminary evidence of Mughdho and Siddhartha's involvement in the murder has been found. Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud earlier informed journalists that the two youths were detained during a drive early Sunday. One of them, sensing the presence of law enforcement agencies, fled and hid in the mulberry garden of the Silk Development Board. Later, he was detained from the Dakhiganj crematorium area adjacent to the mulberry garden.
Police also stated that based on information obtained from preliminary interrogation and evidence from the scene, it is believed that the killers consumed Yaba right inside that building after the murder.
Nazmul Kader, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station under Rangpur Metropolitan Police, said, 'Mughdho Das and Siddhartha Das were detained early Sunday on suspicion of their involvement in this incident. Later, they confessed to the police about their involvement in the murders. For this reason, the two of them have been shown arrested in the case.'
