Tarique Government Set to Borrow One Billion Dollars from International Market

To strengthen its position in the global financial markets and expand its sources of foreign financing, the Bangladesh government is preparing to issue its first-ever foreign-currency sovereign bond. According to a Bloomberg report, under this initiative, plans have been undertaken to raise between 500 million and one billion US dollars from the international capital market within the next three months.

The Bloomberg report noted that JPMorgan Chase & Co., a leading global investment bank, has been appointed to manage the entire bond issuance process. There are plans to release this bond to international investors within the next three months.

Ever since the United States Federal Reserve raised its policy interest rate, the cost of borrowing or raising capital in the global market has remained quite high. According to Bloomberg data, under these circumstances, pricing the bond has become a highly sensitive issue for emerging economies. Relevant sources have indicated that the correct pricing of this bond will be determined only after deeply evaluating the existing conditions of the global market, fluctuations in interest rates, and investor demand.

Although the bond sales process is moving forward under JPMorgan's management, its final release to the market awaits high-level and final approval from the government. It will be opened to the international capital market only after receiving this approval. Bloomberg's analysis stated that this will be Bangladesh's first-ever debut sovereign debt instrument or bond in the international capital market. Through this, alongside easing the existing pressure on the country's foreign exchange reserve, it is expected to convey a positive message to international investors regarding the nation's economy and creditworthiness.

What is a Sovereign Bond: A sovereign bond is a secure promissory note for borrowing from the market on behalf of the government, through which the government borrows money from investors under specific interest conditions and returns the principal amount at the end of the maturity period. When the Bangladesh government undertakes an initiative to raise 500 million to one billion dollars in foreign currency from the international capital market, it is called an international sovereign bond. Through this, dependence on traditional foreign loans decreases and foreign exchange reserves are strengthened. However, to avoid the risks of global interest rates and currency exchange rates, the government must be cautious and transparent in pricing this bond and utilizing the funds.
