Former Meherpur-1 Member of Parliament Abdul Mannan has been arrested by the police. Following his arrest, a court ordered him to be sent to jail after showing him arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. On Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam rejected his bail petition and issued this order.
Around 6:00 AM on Sunday, the Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested him from his residence in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area. Later, he was shown arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at the Tejgaon Industrial Zone Police Station and produced before the court.
The investigating officer of the case, Inspector Masudur Rahman of the Tejgaon Zonal Team of police, prayed to keep him confined in jail. On the other hand, Abdul Mannan's lawyer Al Imran Mukul sought bail. As the state opposed the plea, the court dismissed the bail application. However, Abdul Mannan was not produced in the courtroom during the hearing.
According to the case details, on the morning of June 18, 35 to 40 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and banned Bangladesh Chhatra League brought out a procession in the area adjacent to the Mohakhali Bus Terminal in the capital. It was alleged that at that time, they chanted anti-government slogans and created panic by detonating cocktails. Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Zahidul Haq of Tejgaon Industrial Zone Police Station filed the case on the same day regarding the incident.
